Though India was among the first countries in the world to have passed legislation granting farmers' rights in the form of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Act, 2001, yet more comprehensive and interdisciplinary efforts are required to improve the condition of farmers in India. The text discusses the impact of international economic policies on Indian food sovereignty and on the farmers' livelihood. One of the main objectives of this work is to understand the evolutionary process of economic and legal policies that resulted in subjugation of the Indian government to international pressure disregarding the domestic conditions and self-reliance of the country.
